My day job is writer / segment producer on a TV show called X-Play. It's a videogame review show, so it's sort of like Siskel and Ebert for your PS3. But with more bad jokes. And less guest hosts. Anyway, this is a smattering of recent pieces I've produced for the show. Quick Hit: LairWe have to stay postive when we do a preview, which sometimes works against our credibility. This game turned out to be terrible. Sorry for the hype everyone! Go back to what you were doing.Crush ReviewI thought this game should have been a 4, but our freelance reviewer just didn't dig it. SoÉ yeah. Sorry. I tried.Night Trap Retrospective Remember this game? God, I could watch the musical number all day long and still be entertained. Eternal Sonata Preview This game looks really, really good. No More Heroes Preview Finally, a Wii game that isn't a crappy port of a PS2 game. Halo 3 Preview The episode this preview aired in was one of the highest rated episodes ever. Not my favorite preview, but it did the job. Live Action Acting - Part 1 Back in the day, there were a lot of PC and PS1 games that used real-life actors for their cutscenes. Bad idea. We actually had so many funny clips that we had to spread it out into two separate segments. Live Action Acting Part 2 Spiderman 3 PS3 Review Lord, what an unappealing, low-rent adaptation. Everything about this game felt chintzy and half-baked. Import Game - Dog of Bay Like all of our import games from Japan, this one makes exactly zero sense. It appears to be a musical beat matching game for furries. Plug N Play Games This was going to be Paul and I's magnum opus. The original ending had Leffler going crazy and shooting everyone in the head very graphically. It was gory and pretty funny. Two days before this was going to air, the Virginia Tech tragedy occurred, and it just seemed really inappropriate to run. So the producers snipped off the last minute, making the ending completely nonsensical. I would really have preferred that we never ran it at all, but at that point it was too late to fully yank from the show. SoÉ sorry if you saw this and were completely confused by it. SSX Blur Review I had a lot of fun doing this one. Finally, an opportunity to make fun of stupid snowboard lingo. Also an excuse to play this game, which was pretty fun. Europa Universalis III One of the final images of this is a shot of Paul shooting himself in the head. That was actually just left over from another skit we had filmed. We kind of wrote this live-action sketch around that shot. Voila! TV magic. Phantasmagoria I don't know if you remember this game, but it was an incredibly bad PC point-and-click adventure from the mid-90's. It's frustrating to watch because we make a big deal of the release date in the host wrap, which is incorrect. If you can forgive that mistake, it's worth it for the perfectly cheesy bad acting. Diddy Kong Racing DS This is a remake of the N64 game from 1998. Due to what I can only guess was some legal wrangling over voice-acting rights, all the sound samples were re-recorded for the new versionÉ and they suck. God of War II I don't have much commentary on this except to say that it's a great game. So there. Gay Characters in Games Our chance to smack down some lame, homophobic developers that are littering the videogame landscape. Pimp My Ride Review There's a minigame where you get to Òghost ride the whip.Ó Delightful! Japanese Commercial 1 Series of parody commercials for a fictional Japanese version of X-Play. May only be funny to hardcore fans. Japanese Commercial 2 Japanese Commercial 3 Star Trek Legacy Review I didn't actually produce this one, but I do play Frakes. Trauma Center: Second Opinion Initially, we had a joke about the third game in the series being named ÒTrauma Center: Third Trimester.Ó Didn't fly with our legal team, who aren't huge fans of abortion jokes. Go figure. Elite Beat Agents Review This game has the worst soundtrack of all time, and I argued this point for a really long time with the rest of the producers. But like most videogame fans, they aren't able to distinguish between good music and bad. Yeah. I said it. It's out there. Sopranos: Road to Respect Of all the franchises one would expect to debase itself with a crappy videogame cash-in, I wouldn't think Sopranos would appear on the list. Nevertheless, here it is. And yeah, it's awful. Tony Hawk Project 8 What the hell happened to this series? Desperate Housewives I'm only putting this in here because I feel the need to have something for the 40-plus female demo to watch while they're on my site. Halloween 2006 Paul and I did this Saw parody for last year's Halloween special. It was a lot of fun, but also completely exhausting. Tony Little Tony turned out to be literally the nicest person of all time. I couldn't have asked for a nicer guest star, and he even sent me a Tony Little bobblehead afterwards! Final Fantasy XII Preview At the end of this, I did a bit of fake voice-over. Fun stuff. Para Para Paradise My friend Jason makes a cameo in this as a pasty-faced dork. Cheesiest Videogame Commercials Ever Live from JapanÉ the worst commercials ever. These really ran over there. Desperados 2 I remember that I captured all of the footage for this on a Sunday afternoon, and by the time I was done I had actually really started to like the game, despite all its flaws. Maybe we should have given it a higher score. Gallop Racer 2006 It's a horse racing game. That's all. Don't click on it. Import Game: Girl's Swim Meet Japan is a weird place. Brain Age Review With guest star Stephen Hawking! Star Wars Home Shopping Network Paul and I appear as light-saber salesmen in this clip, a parody of QVC's Knife Show. Eye Toy Review Roundup Quick recap of all the awful EyeToy games we've reviewed on the show. WWII Tank Commander Just a perfectly awful game, the kind you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Torino 2006 Boy, is this not timely. See, a long time ago Dick Cheney shot someone in the faceÉ ah, nevermind. FLOW Urban Dance Uprising Our executive producer at the time really didn't dig the talking robots in this piece. Maybe he didn't watch G.I. Joe when he was a kid. Eyetoy Kinetic Still maybe my favorite thing I've ever done on X-Play. Asheron's Call Throne of Destiny Of all the vitriolic, angry hatemail we get on X-Play (and we get a lot) nothing rivals the response from MMORPG fans. Maybe it's because they're a population that spends most of their time away from any human contact, but they go insane when you criticize the game they've poured thousands of hours of their life into. Their hatred for this particular review ran deep. Halo 3 Map Pack overview I wanted this piece to contain a parody of the racist, homophobic population on Xbox Live, but our producer at the time was scared that people might misinterpret it. So we had to tone things down several notches. Now the characters you see at the end are just sort of generic jerks. Amped 3 Review Adam Sessler plus green-screen! |
